Project Hope to celebrate 25 years of helping the homeless
In the early 1990s, an ecumenical group of leaders from churches, community governments, and area leaders were called to a meeting by the Catholic Commission of Lake and Geauga counties to discuss a growing problem in Lake County — homelessness.
Since that time, Project Hope has gone from a temporary, seasonal shelter that operated in local churches to a year-round program in a permanent, expanded location, offering three comprehensive programs that have made a difference in both the community and hundreds of individuals’ lives each year.
Project Hope for the Homeless will celebrate 25 years of operation in 2018 and provides shelter for up to 50 guests per night at the facility located at 25 Freedom Road, Painesville Township. Up to 38 adult individuals and 12 people within families may stay each night.
Guests may stay a maximum of 45 days and are able to arrive at 7 p.m. each evening with a reservation. Families, however, may arrive at 1 p.m. Monday through Friday. Reservations can be secured by calling 211 from any land line in Lake County or 440-639-4420 from a cell phone.
It is important to understand that Project Hope is not just a place to eat and sleep, but is also an organization that provides a goal-oriented program staffed by people who truly care about guests’ well-being.
“Project Hope is a beautiful mission to invest in,” said Judy Burr, executive director for Project Hope for the Homeless. “Many of the lives that get turned around often end up returning to serve others. That’s the beauty of being around for 25 years. We are blessed to see it all come full circle.”
There are three main ways the community can respond to help further the mission to restore hope and renew the lives of Project Hope guests.
People may donate by dropping off items located on their wish list, donate to provide shelter for a guest at a cost of $39.11 per day through the adopt-a-night program, and volunteering.
The Project Hope wish list of current needs provide services to the shelter guests, aftercare program participants, and gift cards. These needed items may be found at projecthopeonline.org/current-needs.
Financial support from members of the community can be life changing for one family or individual struggling to get out of homelessness. It only costs $39.11 per night, per person, to provide shelter and a goal-driven program that helps more than half of Project Hope’s guests improve their lives. Volunteers are a major key to their ability to provide shelter and care to Lake County’s homeless. These volunteers believe they earn benefits far beyond the amount of effort required of them.
