Explore The Gorge

Welton’s Gorge, a Geauga Park District preserve in Burton Township sometimes called “Geauga County’s Little Grand Canyon,” only rarely accessible with the help of a naturalist guide!

Venture into the rarely visited back country of Welton’s Gorge Registration is now open for a rain-or-shine adventure into the rocky woodland ravines of Welton’s Gorge, a Geauga Park District preserve in Burton Township sometimes called “Geauga County’s Little Grand Canyon,” only rarely accessible with the help of a naturalist guide!

Directions to the property will be provided upon registration at the new www.geaugaparkdistrict.org or 440-286-9516. Geauga Park District’s interest in this property dates back decades, and it was finally purchased in 2009 using a grant from the Clean Ohio Program. Naturalist Dottie Drockton anticipates encounters with deep rock ledges, cool streams, salamanders and other stream life. Please note, though, that this rugged hike will also cover slippery stream bottoms, steep grades and off-trail obstacles like downed trees and stream crossings, so hikers should dress for the weather and wear sturdy shoes with good traction that can get wet.

For more on Geauga Park District offerings, please call 440-286-9516 or visit Geauga Park District online via www.geaugaparkdistrict.org, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram or YouTube.
