More than 5,000 square feet of indoor rock climbing space fills with excitement every day at the Cleveland Rock Gym.  Since its beginning in the mid-1990s, it has become a place where families and adults can have fun, build personal strength and support others with a passion for rock climbing.

Cleveland Rock Gym offers two styles of climbing on its top rope walls (which are 30 feet high) and the boulder walls (which are 12 feet high).  Each offers different challenges.  The top rope walls require ropes, harness and belayer (the person who works the ropes) and is preferred by most people on their first venture into climbing.

The shorter boulder walls can be more challenging and do not use ropes or a belayer, which allows more flexibility in getting open time on the walls.

While staff is available, the gym is always open for experienced climbers to act as a belayer for the top wall for their friends and family.  However, if you need staff assistance, it is recommended that you call ahead first to schedule time on the top rope walls.

Chris Allen, Cleveland Rock Gym owner said, “We have a microgroup that is great for couples seeking to try something different and possibly get away from the kids for a night.  For one hour, you get one on one time with our staff that will help you learn to climb or just have fun on the walls.  All ages are welcome and you can schedule it any day of the week.”

While most five-year-old children generally have the strength to climb, it is an ideal physical challenge for adults and kids over eight years old.

“We encourage anyone, regardless of their age – or fear of heights – to give rock climbing a try.  Since I took over five years ago, we have built a great, friendly rock climbing community here in northeast Ohio. Whether it is your first time or your hundredth, our climbing community encourages each other and gets excited for anyone reaching new goals,” said Allen.

“The fear of heights is actually common for climbers.  At first they want to simply overcome their fear but then find a passion for it.  We have a special wall to help people overcome any fears and work together to build up their comfort height.”

A great challenge for kids and families, birthday parties and private groups are welcome any day of the week with special rates based on the number of climbers in the group – gear rental included. Individual day passes for children and adults are available but do not include gear rental.  Multi-day punch passes and memberships are also offered.

If you’re ready for a challenge, the Cleveland Rock Gym is located on Saint Clair in Euclid, but finding it can be tricky so additional directions and video are online at www.clevelandrockgym.com or call 216-692-3300.

Gym hours are weekdays 3 pm–10 pm and weekends 9 am–7pm for members and noon–7 pm for the public.
