Cleveland Ballet brings “The Nutcracker Suite” back to Playhouse Square, hosts children’s auditions September 23

For the first time in 17 years, Cleveland Ballet will present a delightful, new production of the traditional holiday classical ballet, “The Nutcracker Suite” in Playhouse Square—the nation’s second largest performing arts center.

Performances take place at the Hanna Theatre on Saturday, December 16 at 1 p.m. and 7 p.m., and Sunday, December 17 at 1 p.m. The Sunday matinee includes an opportunity to enjoy English-style afternoon tea following the performance, with a chance to meet the cast of professional dancers.

Paired with Tchaikovsky’s magnificent score, this storybook ballet will transport audience members of all ages on an adventurous journey around the world, all through the imagination of a young girl.

Cleveland Ballet’s Artistic Director Gladisa Guadalupe, a former principal ballerina with the original Cleveland Ballet under the direction of Dennis Nahat, explains that this is not a resurrection of Nahat’s elaborate big-budget productions.

“While past productions were full of grand illusion, our newer younger ‘homegrown’ company delivers a fresh approach to Cleveland-area audiences with an energetic show that is truly breathtaking. Our strong and exquisite dancers exude a sense of magic and romance, while engaging audiences with their charm and vitality from the moment they step on stage,” said Guadalupe.

Children Invited to Audition for “The Nutcracker Suite”

“The Nutcracker Suite is yet another way for the northeast Ohio community to become involved in the growing sense of pride among its residents, as we invite local children to participate on stage alongside our professional dancers,” said Michael Krasnyansky, Cleveland Ballet’s chairman of the board of directors in an exciting announcement.

The company encourages interested children to attend an open audition on Saturday, September 23 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Gund Studio at Playhouse Square, 1375 Euclid Avenue, Cleveland. The company plans to cast 60 individuals for the children’s roles, providing young people with a unique, memorable life experience that boosts self-confidence and sharpens public performance skills. Audition pre-registration is mandatory. More details can be found at clevelandballet.org
