Mentor Ice Arena has programs for all levels and ages

Mentor Civic Arena is the only indoor ice skating complex in Lake County and is literally the coolest place to be.  Whether you are a beginner or a pro, you can find enjoyment at this long-standing popular hangout.

“The ice arena has been here since 1982 and is a great facility because we are open seven days a week, and even if you are not participating in a specific program, you can come socialize and experience time on the ice just open skating with family and friends,” said Colleen Thomas, recreation coordinator.  There are classes for every level including basic learn-to-skate, competitive figure skating and hockey, in-house hockey, travel hockey, synchronized skating and more.  “Most people pick it up easily,” said Thomas.

There is a teen DJ night with a light show on Friday nights which is a nice attraction.  What starts off as recreation may just turn into a career.  “We have developed some National Hockey League players as well as some national figure skating competitors,” said Thomas.

The rink is home to a great youth hockey program and four high school teams.  “We have a figure skating club with over 100 members of skaters doing everything from synchronized skating to competing in singles competitions,” said Thomas.  “There is also a hockey league for adult men and women.  It is for all ages.”

The rink is looking forward to a very bright future with the addition of two very accomplished directors.  Former NHL player Dan Fritsche is in his second season as hockey director, appplying his skills and sharing his experiences which took him to the highest level of the sport.  Recreational and competitive hockey leagues for children as young as 3 years old will be under Dan’s professional guidance.

Michelle Walters (a three-time world skating competitor) is also in her second season as skating director.  She will apply her experience to oversee  the Learn To Skate program.

“Our recent membership numbers are reflective of some very significant growth in each of the ice sports. This growth, along with the upcoming Winter Olympics, makes us confident and driven to  make skating, be it hockey or figure, the predominant activity in this area.  And with the support we have received from the administration and the public I believe we are on the right track,” said Bill Furman, Mentor Ice Arena manager.

The rink offers ice skating lessons from age three through adult.  Check them out and learn a way to have a lifetime of exercise while having fun!
