Building His Own Path

A typical 21st-century middle schooler might be focused on beating a video game high score or posting a daily Snapchat selfie. Few spend their free time doing something that could shape their professional future. But instead of maintaining a social media presence or slaying virtual zombies, Mikey Kalman was learning a trade that would transform his life.

As a young boy, Mikey loved spending time with his father and uncle, learning the ins and outs of construction and landscaping. His father owned a landscaping business, and his uncle ran a construction company. From them, Mikey not only learned to work with his hands, but also to appreciate the essential role that skilled trades play in keeping communities thriving.

Watching his father manage the construction of their family’s home was a turning point. “It was eye-opening,” Mikey recalls. At just 15, he began working for a family friend’s masonry company, with his parents driving him to and from the job each day. As he developed his skills, he saved his earnings—not for video games or gadgets, but to buy equipment for the business he dreamed of starting. That goal taught him the value of discipline, sacrifice, and financial responsibility.

Though he could have pursued a lacrosse scholarship and attended college, Mikey chose a different path. “I didn’t want to waste time in class when I could be getting experience,” he explains. “I like to be hands-on and build things instead of sitting behind a computer.” His parents fully supported the decision. “I’m glad they trusted me to choose my own direction,” he says.

In October 2024, Kalman Property Management officially became an LLC. As the company celebrates its first anniversary, Mikey reflects proudly on launching a business at just 18 years old—a dream four years in the making.

Today, Kalman Property Management offers a wide range of services including new construction, remodeling, landscaping, hardscaping, handyman work, and seasonal services such as snow removal and fall cleanup. “It’s nice to do a little of everything,” says Mikey. “It keeps things interesting and helps the company grow.” He only takes on jobs he knows he can do well. “Customer satisfaction is what people notice most,” he adds. “It would be nice to be known for great service.”

Mikey’s family continues to play an important role, lending equipment, guidance, and sometimes a few extra hands. His father is even teaching him how to handle tax returns. Reliable friends also pitch in on larger projects. “They’d rather work with me than a random company,” Mikey says. “I’m lucky to know people my age who share my drive.”

That youth-driven energy hasn’t gone unnoticed. “I’ve actually had people congratulate us,” Mikey says with a smile. “A lot of customers like supporting local kids who are trying to build something.” Many are surprised to learn how young he is—until they see the quality of his work. “It surprises them even more when we do a good job,” he laughs.
