Earth Day: Take Action

Lake Metroparks will host its annual Earth Day celebration on Sunday, April 26 from noon to 4:00 p.m. at Penitentiary Glen Reservation. This fun and family-friendly event is dedicated to raising environmental awareness and inspiring sustainable action.

Visitors can enjoy an afternoon filled with interactive activities, educational displays and opportunities to connect with local conservation efforts. A free tree giveaway will also be offered while supplies last, encouraging attendees to take part in lasting environmental action.

“Earth Day is an opportunity to turn awareness into action,” said Lake Metroparks Deputy Chief of Outdoor Connections Caitlin Ambrose. “This year’s event will once again highlight how everyday decisions can add up to meaningful change for our environment.”

Community partners and local conservation groups will be on site throughout the event, sharing resources, volunteer opportunities and practical ways to live more sustainably throughout the year. Guests can browse nature-inspired gifts at The Nature Store, shop fair-trade items at the Earth Day Marketplace and purchase native plants and flowers from a local nursery. The Lake‑Geauga Habitat for Humanity ReStore truck will also be onsite accepting donations; visitors are encouraged to visit the organization’s website for a list of accepted items.

Hands‑on activities will include eco‑themed exhibits, games and crafts highlighting conservation and sustainability themes, including a spotlight on pollinators in recognition of 2026 as the Year of the Bee. Local artist Bill Starcher will also return this year, showcasing large‑scale artwork made from recycled materials and demonstrating innovative ways to reuse everyday items.

Families can also enjoy popular Penitentiary Glen Reservation attractions such as Nature Play, scenic hiking trails and a spring art show, along with up‑close encounters with animal ambassadors from the Kevin P. Clinton Wildlife Center and livestock from Lake Metroparks Farmpark.

Weather permitting, guests may enjoy miniature train rides provided by the Lake Shore Live Steamers. For safety reasons, pregnant women are not permitted to ride, and children must be able to sit independently (no lap sitting).

Admission is free and no registration is needed. For more information, visit https://goto.lakemetroparks.com/earth-day
