Sheep Shearing Weekend

Spend part of your Mothers' Day with Lake Metroparks. Watch them shear sheep and goats of their winter coats of wool that can be used to produce variety of fiber products. Learn, hands-on, how to spin, weave and make felt. Meet fiber-producing animals including sheep, goat, alpaca and rabbit. Sheep grow a fleece or coat of lustrous fiber called wool that is used to make many wonderful products from clothing to blankets. Over the summer and fall the sheep will grow enough fleece to keep warm in the winter and provide us with a nice fleece in the spring. Farmers shear the wool each year in the spring to obtain the fiber and to keep the sheep from overheating during the hot summer weather. Think of it as giving the sheep a haircut. Tot, the border collie will herd the sheep through Shepherds Field. See her give the sheep “the eye” as she follows the herding commands of her handler. Watch members of the Western Reserve Spinners & Weavers Guild demonstrate their craft. Lake Metroparks invites moms to a Mother’s Day Tea and Scone (9 am to 3 pm, Sunday only). Complimentary tea & scone for mom, $5 for family members. Admission to Sheep Shearing Weekend is included with regular Farmpark admission. Farmpark members and children under 2 are free.
