Home for The Holidays

Special holiday event at Lake County History Center

The perfect start to this year’s holiday season can be found at the Lake County History Center in Painesville Township. The center, once served as the Lake County Home, but during the holiday season, it becomes a Victorian holiday explosion called “Home for the Holidays” with nearly every inch of the main floors filled with intricate, unique and extravagant Christmas décor. Reflecting the Victorian age of the building, the displays are filled with ribbons, glittering flowers, and exotic plants and birds from nature. The event runs November 30 through December 2. Guests can visit the many crafters exhibiting everything from glorious wood products by Gary Egner, including his famous pepper grinder with the antique looking top to the marvelous lavender booth containing a world of relaxing and delightful smells. Especially popular is the “Mistletoe Market” filled with bargains and beautiful items for gift giving or keeping. These items have been donated and help support the operation of the Lake County History Center. The same halls, galleries and exhibit spaces that contain all these treats also contain unique stories of Lake County. Also in this area are the “Magical Musical Machines,” the well-known exhibit of turn-of-the-century music boxes that cannot only be seen, but heard. The center is one of the only places in Ohio where this can be done. “Santa’s Sweet Shop” is a first stop for many visitors as tables are filled with candy, cookies and breads that have been homemade by LCHS volunteers and are beautifully wrapped for holiday giving. With all the activity, many guests can look forward to lunch at the Candy Cane Café where they will find soup and sandwiches served by volunteers and the opportunity to relax with friends and family. The café is located next to the Sweet Shop and many pick up a plate of sweets for dessert. Due to demand from the community, the LCHS is also keeping the center open on weekends during December as a delightful place to visit or take out-of-town guests. After December 2, hours are Tuesday–Friday 10 am–2 pm and Saturday and Sunday from 1–4 pm. For questions and directions call the center at 440-639-2945 or visit their website.
