Winter Chili Hike

At Penitentiary Glen Reservation

While winter in northeast Ohio may not be people’s favorite time of the year, there is still much to do and enjoy. Wintertime has its own beauty and wonder. Bundle on up and explore this beautiful season! Join in, get outside and experience a winter wonderland during the Winter Chili Hike program. A choice of hikes will vary in length and terrain. A short hike with flat and mild terrain is an option for the novice hiker. A longer hike with rolling terrain and a few steep hills is designed for the experienced hiker. Both hikes will be led by Lake Metroparks naturalists. Hikers wishing to go at their own pace may choose their own self-guided hike. Easy-to-follow, weather-proof trail maps are available in the Nature Center. All ages are welcome to participate in the Winter Chili Hike; under 18 with an adult, please. After completing the hike, warm yourself by a roaring campfire and enjoy some s’mores. Stop by the Kevin P. Clinton Wildlife Center to see native Ohio wildlife up close. Enjoy chili, cornbread and hot beverages served inside the comfortable settings of the Nature Center and listen to the sounds of live music by local musician Ernest Elshaw. Browse our selection of hiking and other nature-related items in The Nature Store including birdfeeders, wildlife houses and other accessories, binoculars by VORTEX, books and field guides for adults and children, nature-inspired t-shirts and discovery toys. Hikers are reminded of the importance of wearing comfortable footwear which is sturdy, warm and water-repellent. Hiking boots are recommended as the trails may be snow- and/or mud-covered. Remember to dress in warm, comfortable layers. Registration is requested for the Winter Chili Hike. A hike patch and a commemorative year hike patch, s’mores, chili and beverages are all included in the $10 registration fee.  Register online at lakemetroparks.com or call 440-358-7275 or 800-669-9226.
