1,000 Ties

Event Connects Male Students to the Business Community…One Tie at a Time

Some may think the tying of a tie as a simple and easy-to-do skill that many people have based on the number of ties that we see out in society. But there are a number of youth that don’t know how to tie a necktie or bow tie. That’s because they either don’t have a male figure in their life to teach them, or the males that are present don’t know how to themselves, so they can’t teach them. This is where the idea of the 1,000 Ties event sprouted from in the mind of Jowan Smith, founder of Getting Our Babies to College 101.

1,000 Ties will be an event where the business community will come together with elementary and high school students to educate these young men on how to tie ties and other pertinent skills that young men should have if they expect to be successful in education and beyond. Some of these skills include proper verbal and nonverbal communication skills, confident hand-shaking and eye contact technique; & how to dress for success, to name a few.

This community-wide event will take place on Saturday, February 16, 2019 at CMSD East Professional Center, 1349 E. 79th Street in Cleveland from noon–2:30 pm with doors opening at 11:30 am. It is free and open to all area young men and their parents in the Cleveland metropolitan area. Light refreshments and appetizers will be available and each young man will not only leave with the knowledge gained from the volunteer-led workshops, but will also leave with a donated tie of their choice.

In addition to the networking and resources available for students and their families, there will also be a special workshop for mothers in attendance to participate in. All financial donations can be made payable to Getting Our Babies to College 101.  All attendees (students and families) and volunteers should register at www.GOBTC101.com by February 11, 2019.

About Getting Our Babies to College 101
Getting Our Babies to College (GOBTC) 101 is a parent-to-parent resource started by a mother who successfully went through the college prep process with her child and was able to get her an academic scholarship.
